Story 47DX/JY007

Story of 47DX/JY007 on Hjarnoe island, 12. August 2011

Team was 47DX002 Soren and 47DX109 Jesper

In connection with Soren and xyl of Soren had some errands around Horsens firth, which Hjarnoe island lies in, Soren had devoted some time to create an island activation. He asked if I would like to participate, which I very much wanted.

We agreed to meet in Snaptun harbor where the ferry sails to Hjarnoe. This was the first time we met, it was nice and we quickly got to talking about radio-related stuff. While we waited for the ferry we had taken the first images to use as proof for the Delta-Xray Radio Club, just after we made QSO with 47DX101 John at his QTH and 47DX116 Frank, who was mobile on the road to Flensburg in Germany. Soren and I both had radios in our cars and tested our antennas in QSO with John, results showed Sorens worked the best.

Finally came the ferry, we drove quickly on board and after a trip of 800 meters, we arrived Hjarnoe island EU-172 JY-007, during the ride to our destination we passed Hjarnoe former inn / hotel and Hjarnoe church, where we stopped for to take some pictures as evidence, what a beautiful scenery and views of the Horsens firth.

We then drove out to the exquisite place where we were going to run the radio off, but not without problems because the road was only a dirt road with big holes for tractor driving. Luckily we arrived without damage to the cars, we set up the Bamby antenna, made Kipor generator ready and coupled Yaesu FT-897 radio to power supply etc. in about half an hour. At 12.20 UTC we were QRV and the first QSO was John 47DX101 with strong signal as always. Propagation was pretty bad, so after 24 QSO's in just over half an hour the band was quiet, we went to get something to eat at Hjarnoe island café. Here we had a very delicious fish dish (see pictures), chatting and wrote in the guestbook as we left the place. At 15 UTC we were QRV again, but the band had only improved slightly and in about 4 hours, we managed only 61 QSO’s. QRT time was half an hour before we have to be on the ferry, so now we had very busy, mostly me, because Soren just had to take the last pictures, luckily we reached the ferry.

When we arrived Snaptun harbor at mainland Jutland again, Soren and I talked about today’s DX'expedition where we could quickly agreed that radio conditions unfortunately did not meet our expectations. Overall the day was successful and interesting for me, partly because of the meeting with Soren.

Many thanks to all those who called us and good dx.
