Story 13DX/O-002

Story from 13DX/O-002 activity.

I have dreamt about activating one of the North German islands for some years now. I chose Poel because that last it was last active more than 15 yrs ago with only few contacts.

I spoke with 13RF365 Frank during January 2011 on radio – and after that on Skype. Franks lives only 50 km from Poel – for me it was a great chance to find someone local – that knew the language and could find a good place to stay on Poel. We decided for a bed and Breakfast - close to the ocean facing south.

In the beginning of February we decided to go the weekend May 20-22nd.

Frank did set up a team with 2 friends: 13TH2209 Giuseppe and 13KM Jürgen – so with myself and Frank we were 4 persons. Perfect.

Due to change of plans from Jürgens job he had to work during the weekend… Therefore Jürgen had to cancel.

Finally it was Friday and I took the ferry from Denmark to Germany. Arriving on Fehmarn island I could not resist stopping to run the activation 13DX/o001 for a short while.

Arriving at Poel around 15:30 local time, we found our rooms and immediately began to setup the antennas. First we did set the Bamby – we also brought a “3 element” Skypper to assemble later – as a good and stabile DX-lightweight antenna.

At 17:08 local time we had our first QSO’s with 26 division.

With 2 operators working the radio, the 3rd person did assemble the 3 element yagi model “Skypper”. This gave us a good chance to test the 2 antennas up against each other – and see how well the Skypper worked even though it was only 6 meters above ground and the Bamby 14 meters above ground The rest of the Friday and Saturday we did change antennas very often, always to use the best antenna for each station worked.

Time flew and suddenly it was late Friday – we kept taking in stations until approx. 23:25 (21:25 GMT) and having 88 stations logged. After a good nights sleep we met at 8.30 for breakfast – a traditional German breakfast – and at 10:00 we came on air again. Great propagation, we felt lucky. Good pile up and due to QRM and many stations calling we went split over 2 frequencies. Good food, more stations logged, more good food and even more stations logged, the results of Saturday ended with 290 stations logged.

Sunday was like a disaster compared to Saturday. Good propagation, good signals, but few stations in log. And due to Thunderstorm arriving we decided to close the station at 12:00 GMT with only 36 stations logged. The afternoon was spent with sightseeing, photo proofs, more good food and disassembling the antennas.

We had a great trip, lots of good friendship and fun, not to forget perfectly cooked food and cold drinks.

We have agreed to activate more German islands next year – more news during April 2012.
