47DX002/PI - Peberholm Island - The Story

History:

I travel between Denmark and Sweden several times per year. Every time passing Oresund Bridge/Tunnel - and therefore also Peberholm island, which is a small island connecting the bridge (towards east - Sweden) to the Tunnel (towards west - Denmark).

From Denmark to Peberholm we go via a Tunnel, then up to Peberholm island - passing the island - and then up on the bridge to Sweden.

Peberholm island is man-made as a part of the E20 freeway connection between Denmark and Sweden. The island is approx. 4 km long and 300 meter wide. The island was made in the late 1980's as an integrated part of the bridge and tunnel.

It is illegal to stop at the island, or arrive at the island via boat. The island is not accessable in legal way as we want wildlife to carry on without human interference. However, there is an emergency lane at the freeway and I stopped the car on this lane for 15 minutes. Normally this is the time it takes the police to arrive and ask one to leave immediately (I tried this at a similar island - Sprogø (Sprog island) last year.

During the 15 minutes stay I managed to work several stations and finally having activated this island.

The story:

I have a small 11-meter antenna mounted on the car for normal QSO's but when I need longer distances I mount the DV27L - a full quarter-wave antenna (2,70 meters long). This antenna performs very well, however it's a very long antenna…

I mounted the DV27L antenna with a magnet mount to the car at a petrol station just north of Lund city. In order not to loose the antenna (too much windload) I use strings ( mini guide-ropes ) from the antennas middle to the car:
- one string to front of car
- one string to back left and
- one string to back right
With these 3 strips mounted the antenna is securely placed at the car and I can drive at a speed of 100 km/h without problems.

Unluckily the mounting took place in quite bad weather. It was snowing, windy - and cold.
During mounting a truckdriver came over to me asking me what I was doing!? The antenna is 2,70 meters long and with the strings mounted it looks quite stupid :-) Gladly it was dark and most people at the petrol station could not see what I was doing.

Leaving the petrol station heading the final approx. 60 km's to the bridge I worked several stations as 21/47DX002: 47DX019, 21KG001, 47#one, 47DX132, 47PM053 and more.

Arriving at the payment terminal I was asked what the antenna was for and how long it was. After some dialogue I understood that the reason for asking was because the entrance to the tunnel is limited to max. 4,2 meters!! - but that would be no problem for me.

At Peberholm things went smooth and without problems. I managed to make some filmclips via the phone and take some photos with the camera. First station in log was 47DX019 Henrik and last station worked was 21GK001 Gery - at 21:20 local time.
The stay was short as there were no skip-openings (only local stations heard and worked). Also it was needed to have a short stay in order to leave before trouble...

As proofs I made photos of the island (however it was dark!!) and photos and film of QSO's and ther GPS with coordinates. Besides this I have the ticket to access the bridge (/island). To see the proofs, click here.
