Story 47DX/JY014
Story from 47DX/JY014 activity held during July 2009. Hello DXers Having been invited to a birthday party by relatives in S.E Denmark, gave me oppourtunity to explore the EU172 region. Herein lays many an island, yet to be activated on 11mtrs. Kalvø JY-014 looked like an easy target, easily accesible, a new one, but not qualifying for IOTA. Luckily thats not a restriction on 11mtrs, the band which is inhabited by REAL island chasers. Any island is a target, and counts in some extent. Thursday evening, XYL and I left home, we stayed over night at a Hotel on Als Island (JY-001). Friday by midday XYL were finally satisfied, after having performed shopping raids in Sønderborg city. (While I were getting impatient, wanting to GO !) After a 45mins drive we reached Kalvø, which turned out to be a little unspoiled paradise. Next minutes were spend looking for a way to reach high ground, luckily a dirt road eastbound around the island lead us up on top, providing a free shot in all directions. Around 09:30utc antenna were assembled, radio and PA connected and switched on. 47DX132 Carsten were heard CQing on 555. During the next minuttes 47DX132 Carsten, 47DX246 Jakub, 26DX047 Darran and 47DX054 Leif were logged. This later showed to be the most hectic minutes for the next 3hours. Typical midday blackout. A thunderstorm with heavy rain and hails moved in from west. When ligthings and thunder began arriving with less than a second separation, I decided to disconnect the coax and wait out the storm. About half an hour later coax were re-connected, the storm now moving eastwards kept provided 9+ static crashes through out the stay. At 13:30utc antenna and radio setup were disassembled, 47DX/JY014 QRT with just 27 QSO's from 10 DXCC entities logged. Thanks to those logged, or trying to get logged. Vy 73 John 47DX101 return |
