Story 47DX/SJ027 ![]() Story: This activation started a bit differently than others, as the 2 operators just met each other at a summer party 2024, a few months before the activation. We both found that activating is super fun and shortly after we met, we started to chat about a “Trial-activation” to see if we could get along during a longer activation. We are both rather busy with everyday life but found that a one day trip to the inland island Gavnø was a good spot for the trial. We agreed to meet up November 23rd with a meetup time at 10.00 local time (09.00 UTC). Preparation for the trip: Joe, 47DX012 got a new van, so first step was to ensure that the mast used for the Activation on Skarø (47DX/FY012 in June 2023) would line up and fit on the new van. Small adjustments were made, and mast setup was ready for activation, we sed a prototype of a 4 element yagi, Reflector driven for the activation. Site for the activation was planned to be on the high ground of the island, app 24 m above sea level yet still close to the sea. Technical setup: 4 element yagi at approx. 6 m (not higher due to high winds), Icom 7610 and battery / generator to supply the radio and rotor. The Activation day: We, Søren (47DX002) and Joe (47DX012) met at the island, next to the castle and began driving to the Activation site. Arriving at the site we could see that the site was not as good as expected due to many high trees all around, so we agreed to move on to find another and more suitable site. Søren found a nice spot close to the water on the west side of the island with easy access for our cars, after parking we started to install the mast and assemble the yagi antenna. One of the castles employees came by in his tractor just to see what we were doing. No issues, he wished us good luck. Antenna assembled and put on the mast. Due to the high winds we agreed to have the mast erected to app 6 m (max height for the mast is 10m) First contact was made at 11.00 UTC with Darren 26DX047. Short after a pile up was established and with a few short breaks we ended with a total of 120 QSO logged with last QSO made at 14.30 UTC. Lessons from the activation: - Søren and Joe made good friends :-) - The new BMS on the 5KW battery setup is rather noisy on the radio - At temperatures around 5 degrees Celsius we didn’t need the heater in the van Unfortunately we forgot all about doing perfectly good proofs – we even forgot to buys todays newspaper, but we did take some screen shots with GPS locations, and a lot of pics and a small video, good that this is not a very wanted island, as it has been activated before. Anyway, we did have a great time and now we plan for yet another island during spring 2025 and dreaming of something more interesting during the summertime. Thanks for reading. Greetings 47DX012 Joe and 47DX002 Søren. return |
