Story 49DX/EU004/C
Story from 49DX/EU004/C activity.Saturday 7th July 2012. Hire car was collected at 16:45 local time, I'd booked a little Chevrolet Matiz knowing it was easy to remove the 12v Battery, I was given a Fiat Panda, worried it might not be possible to reomve the battery with the limited tools we had, we drove around the corner and flipped the bonnet, our 10mm spanner fitted the battery terminals and the only other spanner we had which was 13mm fitted the battery securing bracket, sorted. Before driving to Es Figueral to activate Cala Verde island I decided to take a detour to the resort of Es Cana to see it I could locate the guy (Steve) which took us 3 years previous to Es Cana isl ( 49DX/E-096 ) via speed boat. The idea was to set up an island for the following day (Sunday) then drive to Es figueral to activate Cala Verde island. Just like 3 years ago Steve was chilling under a large parasol on the east side of Es Cana Beach, after a friendly chat where we discussed our intended island targets I settled on La Redonda island E-092 which was located in the next bay to Es Cana, price was quickly agreed and we planned to meet the following morning around 09:30 - 10:00am local, Sean and I proceeded to drive to Es Figueral to activate 49DX/EU004/C - Cala Verde isl. While in England I had drew a basic map with help from GoogleEarth, I'd learnt from past experiences what looked like a leisurely drive could turn time comsuming due to terrible road traffic signing ( or lack of it ), within 20 or 30 minutes using my map and notes we were parked just a minute or so walk from Cala Verde Playa Es Figueral. After removing the 12v Battery from the Fiat Panda hire car, I went in the nearest shop and bought 4 PostCards of Es Figueral showing the island, stamps had already been purchased the day before, the till receipt for the Postcards showing the area name, date and time were saved to help towards proofs (see proofs page). Sean carrying the Battery in our strong bag, I carried the antenna and parasol and also the large holdall which held everything else, we proceeded to the beach, access to the little island / rock was easy, a concrete jetty has been built so its possible to walk on the island, Cala Verde island is now used by the boat / ferry which does daily trips to Formentera island. Once on the island the vertical antenna was soon assembled and fixed to a nicely placed steel pole I think is used by the ferry, the rest of the equipment was set up, before txing, proofs were collected. Band was in great shape, first in log was 1AT278, We had regular visitors wondering what we were doing, quite a bit of time was spent explaining, this was ok when we didn't have many takers, the weather quickly turned overcast and breezy, in just under 3 hours of operation 49DX/EU004/C went QRT when we started to lose light, last in the log was good friend Carsten 132. Thanks for all which called in. 73 de..Darran and Sean. return |
